The Rarity of Sincerity (4): Treating the Illness of fame-Craving & Understanding the Nature of Popularity

๐ Ibn al-Qayyim (ุฑุญู ู ุงููู) said: And some of the Salaf said:
ุฑูุจูู ู ูุณูุชูุฏูุฑูุฌู ุจูููุนูู ู ุงูููููู ูููููู ูุง ููุนูููู ู
"There may be someone who is led to destruction by the blessings of Allah while he does not know it.
ููุฑูุจูู ู ูุบูุฑููุฑู ุจูุณูุชูุฑู ุงูููููู ุนููููููู ูููููู ูุง ููุนูููู ู
And there may be someone who is deluded by Allah's concealment of his faults while he does not know it.
ููุฑูุจูู ู ูููุชูููู ุจูุซูููุงุกู ุงููููุงุณู ุนููููููู ูููููู ูุง ููุนูููู ู
And there may be someone who is deceived by the praise of people for him while he does not know it!"

๐ Najm al-Din Ahmad ibn Abdul Rahman ibn Qudamah al-Maqdisi (died 689 AH ุฑุญู ู ุงููู) said,
"ุงุนูู : ุฃู ุฃุตู ุงูุฌุงู ูู ุญุจ ุงูุชุดุงุฑ ุงูุตูุช ูุงูุงุดุชูุงุฑุ ูุฐูู ุฎุทุฑ ุนุธูู ุ ูุงูุณูุงู ุฉ ูู ุงูุฎู ูู. ูุฃูู ุงูุฎูุฑ ูู ููุตุฏูุง ุงูุดูุฑุฉุ ููู ูุชุนุฑุถูุง ููุง ููุง ูุฃุณุจุงุจูุงุ ูุฅู ููุนุช ู ู ูุจู ุงููู ุชุนุงููุ ูุฑูุง ุนููุงุ ููุงููุง ูุคุซุฑูู ุงูุฎู ูู".
"Know that the origin of status-seeking is the love of spreading one's fame and becoming renowned, which is a great danger. Safety lies in obscurity. The people of goodness did not aim for fame or expose themselves to it or its causes. If it occurred by the decree of Allah, they fled from it, preferring to remain obscure."
After mentioning many reports from the Sunnah and the lives of the Salaf (see previous article in this series), he continues:
โฆูุฅู ููู: ูุฐุง ููู ูุถููุฉ ุงูุฎู ููุ ูุฐู ุงูุดูุฑุฉ ูุฃู ุดูุฑุฉ ุฃูุซุฑ ู ู ุดูุฑุฉ ุงูุฃูุจูุงุกุ ูุฃุฆู ุฉ ุงูุนูู ุงุก.
...So, if it is said: This includes the virtue of obscurity and condemns fame, but what fame is greater than that of the prophets and the leading scholars?
ูููุง: ุงูู ุฐู ูู ุทูุจ ุงูุฅูุณุงู ุงูุดูุฑุฉ ุ ูุฃู ุง ูุฌูุฏูุง ู ู ุฌูุฉ ุงููู ุชุนุงูู ู ู ุบูุฑ ุทูุจ ุงูุฅูุณุงู ูููุณ ุจู ุฐู ูู ุ
We would say: What is reprehensible is seeking fame for oneself. However, when fame comes from Allah, the Most High, without a person's pursuit, it is not blameworthy.
ุบูุฑ ุฃู ูู ูุฌูุฏูุง ูุชูุฉ ุนูู ุงูุถุนูุงุกุ ูุฅู ู ุซู ุงูุถุนูู ูุงูุบุฑูู ุงููููู ุงูุตูุนุฉ ูู ุงูุณุจุงุญุฉุ ุฅุฐุง ุชุนูู ุจู ุฃุญุฏ ุบุฑู ูุบุฑููุูุฃู ุง ุงูุณุงุจุญ ุงููุญุฑูุฑุ ูุฅู ุชุนูู ุงูุบุฑูู ุจู ุณุจุจ ููุฌุงุชูู ูุฎูุงุตูู .
Yet, its presence can be a trial for the weak, for the weak are like a drowning person who is not skilled in swimming; if someone clings to him, both will drown. But for a skilled swimmer, if the drowning cling to him, it becomes a means for their rescue and salvation.โ
[The Cure for Status Seeking & Clout Chasing]
๐ Ibn Qudamah (ุฑุญู ู ุงููู) continues:
ุงุนูู : ุฃู ู ู ุบูุจ ุนูู ููุจู ุญุจ ุงูุฌุงูุ ุตุงุฑ ู ูุตูุฑ ุงููู ุนูู ู ุฑุงุนุงุฉ ุงูุฎููุ ู ุดุบููุงู ุจุงูุชุฑุฏุฏ ุฅูููู ุ ูุงูู ุฑุขุฉ ููู ุ ููุง ูุฒุงููู ุฃููุงูู ูุฃูุนุงูู ู ูุชูุชุงู ุฅูู ู ุง ูุนุธู ู ูุฒูุชู ุนูุฏูู ุ
Know that when love for status overwhelms the heart, one becomes preoccupied with pleasing people, eager to engage with them, and always mindful in speech and action of what will elevate their status among them.
ูุฐูู ุจุฐุฑ ุงูููุงูุ ูุฃุตู ุงููุณุงุฏุ ูุฃู ูู ู ู ุทูุจ ุงูู ูุฒูุฉ ูู ูููุจ ุงููุงุณ ุงุถุทุฑ ุฃู ููุงูููู ุจุฅุธูุงุฑ ู ุง ูู ุฎุงู ุนููุ ููุฌุฑุฐูู ุฅูู ุงูู ุฑุงุกุงุฉ ุจุงูุนุจุงุฏุงุช ูุงูุชุญุงู ุงูู ุญุธูุฑุงุชุ ูุงูุชูุตู ุฅูู ุงูุชูุงุต ุงููููุจ.
This is the seed of hypocrisy and the root of corruption. For anyone who seeks a place in people's hearts is compelled to engage in hypocrisy by displaying qualities they do not possess, leading to ostentation in worship, venturing into prohibitions, and devising ways to capture hearts.
ููุฐูู ุดุจู ุงูุฑุณูู ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู ูุณูู ุญุจ ุงูู ุงู ูุงูุดุฑู ูุฅูุณุงุฏูู ุง ููุฏูู ุจุฐุฆุจูู ุถุงุฑููู ุฃุฑุณูุง ูู ุบูู .
For this reason, the Messenger ๏ทบ likened the love of wealth and honor and their corrupting influence on religion to two ferocious wolves let loose among sheep.
ูุญุจ ุงูุฌุงู ุฅุฐุงู ู ู ุงูู ูููุงุชุ ูุฌุจ ุนูุงุฌู ูุนูุงุฌู ู ุฑูุจ ู ู ุนูู ูุนู ูุ
Therefore, the love of status is destructive and must be treated. The treatment consists of knowledge and action.
ุฃู ุง ุงูุฃููุ ููู ุฃู ูุนูู ุฃู ุงูุณุจุจ ุงูุฐู ูุฃุฌูู ุฃุญุจ ุงูุฌุงูุ ูู ูู ุงู ุงููุฏูุฉ ุนูู ุฃุดุฎุงุต ุงููุงุณ ููููุจูู ุ ูุฐูู ุฅุฐุง ุตูุง ูุณูู ูููู ูู ุขุฎุฑู ุงูู ูุช
Firstly, one must recognize that the reason for loving status is the desire to be the ultimate example for people over peoples personalities and hearts, which even in its purest and most safest form ends with death.
ูููุจุบู ุฃู ูุชููุฑ ูู ููุณู ูู ุงูุฃุฎุทุงุฑ ูุงูุขูุงุช ุงููุงุญูุฉ ูุฃุตุญุงุจ ุงูุฌุงู ูู ุงูุฏููุงุ ู ู ุชุทุฑู ุงูุญุณุฏ ุฅูููู ุ ููุตุฏูู ุจุงูุฅูุฐุงุกุ ูุชุฑุงูู ุฎุงุฆููู ุนูู ุงูุฏูุงู ู ู ุฒูุงู ุฌุงููู ุ ู ุญุชุฑุฒูู ู ู ุชุบููุฑ ู ูุฒูุชูู ูู ุงููููุจ.
One should reflect on the risks and afflictions that befall those with status in this world, such as becoming targets of envy and harm, always fearing the loss of their status, and guarding against changes in their standing in peopleโs hearts.
ูุงููููุจ ุฃุดุฏ ุชุบูุฑุงู ู ู ุงููุฏุฑุฉ ูู ุบููุงููุงุ ูุงูุงุดุชุบุงู ุจู ุฑุงุนุงุฉ ุฐูู ุบู ูู ุนุงุฌูุฉุ ู ูุฏุฑุฉ ูุญูุธ ุงูุฌุงูุ ููุง ููู ู ุฑุฌู ุงูุฏููุงุจู ุฎูููุงุ ูุถูุงู ุนู ุง ูููุช ูู ุงูุขุฎุฑุฉุ ููุฐุง ู ู ุญูุซ ุงูุนูู .
Hearts are more volatile than boiling water, so being preoccupied with maintaining status brings immediate worries and troubles, failing to deliver the hoped-for worldly benefits, not to mention what is lost in the hereafter. This is the knowledge aspect.
ูุฃู ุง ุงูุนูุงุฌ ู ู ุญูุซ ุงูุนู ูุ ููู ุฅุณูุงุท ุงูุฌุงู ู ู ูููุจ ุงูุฎูู ุจุฃูุนุงู ุชูุฌุจ ุฐูู
As for the treatment in terms of action, it involves removing the desire for status from peopleโs hearts through deeds that necessitate this changeโฆโ
[Remind Yourself that the Religion Doesnโt Need You]
๐ Hamdun Al-Qassar (ุฑุญู ู ุงููู) said:
ุงูุชููููุงุถูุนู ุฃููู ููุง ุชูุฑูู ููุฃูุญูุฏู ุฅูููู ููููุณููู ุญูุงุฌูุฉูุ ููุง ููู ุงูุฏููููู ููููุง ููู ุงูุฏููููููุง.
"Humility is not seeing anyone as needing you, neither in religion nor in the world." [Al Madarij]
๐ Ibn Qudamah (ุฑุญู ู ุงููู) said:
ูู ู ุฃุญุณ ู ู ููุณู ูุฐู ุงูุตูุงุชุ ูุงููุงุฌุจ ุนููู ุงูุงููุฑุงุฏ ูุงูุนุฒูุฉุ ูุทูุจ ุงูุฎู ูู ูุงูู ุฏุงูุนุฉ ูููุชุงููุ ููุฏ ูุงู ุงูุตุญุงุจุฉูุชุฏุงูุนูู ุงููุชุงููุ ููู ู ููู ููุฏ ูู ุฃู ุฃุฎุงู ููุงู.
Whoever recognizes these traits in themselves, it is obligatory upon them to seek solitude and isolation, to pursue obscurity, and to avoid issuing religious decrees, as the Companions of the Prophet used to defer giving fatwas to each other, each hoping another would suffice him.
ูุนูุฏ ูุฐุง ููุจุบู ุฃู ูุชูู ุดูุงุทูู ุงูุฅูุณุ ูุฅููู ูุฏ ูููููู: ูุฐุง ุณุจุจ ูุงูุฏุฑุงุณ ุงูุนูู ุ
In this situation, it is also necessary to beware of the devils among humans, for they might claim that such withdrawal could lead to the obscurity of knowledge.
ููููู ููู : ุฏูู ุงูุฅุณูุงู ู ุณุชุบู ุนููุ ููู ู ุช ูู ูููุฏู ุงูุฅุณูุงู ุ ูุฃูุง ุบูุฑ ู ุณุชุบู ุนู ุฅุตูุงุญ ููุจูุ
To them, one should respond: "The religion of Islam does not depend on me; if I died, Islam would not collapse, and I am in need of rectifying my own heart."
ููููู ููุฑ ุงูุนุงูู ูู ุงูุชูุทู ูุฎูุงูุง ูุฐู ุงูุตูุงุช ู ู ููุจูุ ูุณุฃู ุงููู ุฃู ูุตูุญ ูุณุงุฏ ูููุจูุง ูุฃู ูููููุง ูู ุง ูุฑุถุงู ุนูุง.
Therefore, let the scholar focus on discerning these subtle traits in their heart. We ask Allah to correct our heartsโ corruption and guide us to what pleases Him.โ
[The Meaninglessness of Most Fame]
The Tฤbi'ฤซ Mฤlik ibn Dฤซnฤr (d. 127 AH ุฑุญู ู ุงููู) said:
ู ูููุฐู ุนูุฑูููุชู ุงููููุงุณู ููู ู ุฃูููุฑูุญู ุจูู ูุฏูุญูููู ู ููููู ู ุฃูููุฑููู ู ูุฐูู ููุชูููู ู
"Since I came to know people, I have neither rejoiced in their praise nor disliked their blame."
ููููู ููููู ู ุฐูุงููุ
It was asked, "And why is that?"
ููุงูู ููุฃูููู ุญูุงู ูุฏูููู ู ู ูููุฑูุทู ููุฐูุงู ููููู ู ู ูููุฑูุทู
He said, "Because their praiser exaggerates and their critic exaggerates."

๐ Ibn Khaldun (ุฑุญู ู ุงููู) said,
"ูููู ุฃู ุชุตุงุฏู (ุงูุดูุฑุฉ) ู ูุถุนูุง ูู ุฃุญุฏ ู ู ุทุจูุงุช ุงูููุงุณ ู ู ุงูู ููู ูุงูุนูู ุงุก ูุงูุตูุงูุญูู ูุงูู ูุชุญููู ูููุถุงุฆู ุนูู ุงูุนู ูู
โFame seldom finds its rightful place among people in various strata, including kings, scholars, the righteous, and those who claim virtues generally.
ููุซูุฑ ู ู ูู ุงุดุชูุฑ ุจุงูุดูุฑู ููู ุจุฎูุงูู ููุซูุฑ ู ู ูู ุชุฌุงูุฒุช ุนูู ุงูุดููุฑุฉ ููู ุฃุญูู ุจูุง ูุฃูููุง
Many who are known for evil are the opposite of that, and many who are more deserving of fame are overlooked, even though they truly deserve it.
ููุฏ ุชุตุงุฏู ู ูุถุนูุง ูุชููู ุทุจูุง ุนูู ุตุงุญุจูุง
Sometimes, fame does find its rightful place and fits its bearer accurately.
ูุงูุณูุจุจ ูู ุฐูู ุฃูู ุงูุดููุฑุฉ ูุงูุตููุช ุฅููู ุง ูู ุง ุจุงูุฅุฎุจุงุฑ ูุงูุฅุฎุจุงุฑ
This is because fame and reputation are spread through reports, and reporting involves forgetting the original intentions when transmitted.
ูุฏุฎููุง ุงูุฐูููู ุนู ุงูู ูุงุตุฏ ุนูุฏ ุงูุชููุงูู ููุฏุฎููุง ุงูุชูุนุตูุจ ูุงูุชูุดููุน ููุฏุฎููุง ุงูุฃููุงู ููุฏุฎููุง ุงูุฌูู ุจู ุทุงุจูุฉ ุงูุญูุงูุงุชููุฃุญูุงู ูุฎูุงุฆูุง ุจุงูุชููุจูุณ ูุงูุชูุตููุน ุฃู ูุฌูู ุงูููุงูู
It also involves bias, partisanship, illusions, and ignorance about whether the stories match actual circumstances due to their obscurity, deliberate misrepresentation, or simply the ignorance of the reportโs narrator.
ููุฏุฎููุง ุงูุชููุฑูุจ ูุฃุตุญุงุจ ุงูุชูุฌููุฉ ูุงูู ุฑุงุชุจ ุงูุฏููููููุฉ ุจุงูุซููุงุก ูุงูู ุฏุญ ูุชุญุณูู ุงูุฃุญูุงู ูุฅุดุงุนุฉ ุงูุฐููุฑ ุจุฐูู
It also involves people trying to ingratiate themselves with those of high status and worldly ranks through praise and flattery, improving appearances, and spreading their name in this manner.
ูุงูููููุณ ู ููุนุฉ ุจุญุจู ุงูุซููุงุก ูุงูููุงุณ ู ุชุทุงูููู ุฅูู ุงูุฏูููุง ูุฃุณุจุงุจูุง ู ู ุฌุงู ุฃู ุซุฑูุฉ ูููุณูุง ู ู ุงูุฃูุซุฑ ุจุฑุงุบุจูู ูู ุงููุถุงุฆู ููุงู ูุงูุณูู ูู ุฃูููุง
People are naturally inclined to love praise, and humans are drawn towards the worldly and its means, whether status or wealth and are not generally inclined towards virtues nor compete for them.
ูุฃูู ู ุทุงุจูุฉ ุงูุญูู ู ุน ูุฐู ููููุง
Where is the alignment of truth with all this?
ูุชุฎุชูู ุงูุดููุฑุฉ ุนู ุฃุณุจุงุจ ุฎูููุฉ ู ู ูุฐู ูุชููู ุบูุฑ ู ุทุงุจูุฉ
Thus, fame deviates from its true reasons due to these hidden causes and does not match reality.
ูููู ู ุง ุญุตู ุจุณุจุจ ุฎููู ููู ุงููุฐู ูุนุจูุฑ ุนูู ุจุงูุจุฎุช ูู ุง ุชูุฑูุฑ ูุงููู ุณุจุญุงูู ูุชุนุงูู ุฃุนูู ูุจู ุงูุชููููู
Everything that occurs due to hidden reasons is what is referred to as happenstance, as has been established, and Allah, Glorious and Exalted is He, knows best and grants success.โ
